So what can we expect from the new iOS this “fall”? And (more importantly) how will it effect me?
Well, its going to be a significant update for both the iPhone and the iPad. So starting at the top………
Notifications. all in one place. Nice.
iMessage. Hmmmm… not sure this is such a big deal. Proof will be in the usage I guess. It suggests I will be able to send txt message from my wi-fi only iPad. I’ll believe that when I see it!
Newsstand. Really not that interested in paying subscriptions for this type of thing. If there were more free stuff……well…..
Reminders. Well, its about bloody time Apple! Welcome to the real world.
Twitter. Native integration can’t be a bad thing. Will speed up some of the tasks that frustrate. Especially on the iPhone.
Camera. Access from the lock screen, and physical shutter button. wow. Amazed it took them this long to work this one out. Crappy non-smart phones have been doing this for years.
Photos. Enhance your images just like you do right now with the free photoshop app.
Safari. Ok, now we are getting somewhere. This is going to be a regular improvement feature. The “Reader” feature in Safari is superb, and almost makes it my number 1 browser on my Mac Book Pro. Will be very nice for iOS devices. Also, Tabs on the iPad browser will speed up that switching around. Very nice.
PC free. Will not effect me in the slightest……… except during those pesky updates. Oh wait…. does that mean I am iTunes free for iOS updates…. wait a second…. this is what Android have done from the start right ??….. woohoo!! And whats this “PC” business in the title? Shouldn’t that read “computer free”?
Mail client improved. Look forward to that. it’s pretty basic right now, so it can only be better right?
Calendar improvement. Ditto.
Game Centre. yeah…. whatever. Boring.
Wi-Fi Sync. Now thats nice. Will be great if I can get it to sync to my iTunes friendly, always-on NAS drive. Will let you know about that.
Gestures for iPad. Oh yeah….. lets get busy. This is something I use all day on my Macbook, so bring it on baby!
Airplay Mirroring. Cant see this one being used much. If ever. At all. Maybe I should get an Apple TV?
Accessibility. Always a good word to see on any hardware/firmware update. Custom vibration sounds useful for iPhone.
So what’s the delay? Well my bet is that iOS5 will be released as the default firmware in the new iPhone 5. It’s only a matter of time. And tying those two names together makes for a marketers dream.
When does “fall” start and end officially then?
